Every year, we see big dances, filled with food and decor. We have fun during spirit week. We go to events with ice cream, donuts, popcorn – the list goes on. All of this is planned by the ASB and Spirit team. Read more to see the impact of ASB and Spirit, along with interviews from your own grade representatives.
First, what is ASB/Spirit? This team is a student-led organization that gives a voice to high schoolers. ASB, with a focus on admin and organization, can create real change. For example, one ASB group came up with our Wednesday schedule.
The Spirit team focuses on event planning, and school spirit.
Elected at the start of the year, grade representatives plan fun parties and events. There’s HOCO, high school dances, spirit weeks, and more.
Both ASB and Spirit are equally important to campus life.
ASB this school year is led by Muadh Chummun (‘26), and Spirit reps are led by Allie Prisecaru (‘26). The ASB/Spirit team has already planned a couple events in these first few months of school. We’ve had HOCO, the Halloween Catwalk, two spirit weeks, and grade level events, like the Junior Jumpscare, and Spooky Pizookies. To learn more about ASB and Spirit, I interviewed four 9th grade representatives. I talked to Eva Yu and Anusha Arora from ASB, along with Spirit reps Alyssa Li, and Nolan Hubler.
One question that I asked was “Why did you run for Spirit/ASB?”.
Nolan H. explains, “I ran for Spirit because I really like Overlake and the community”. Spirit is all about impact on students.
Grade representative Anusha A. reflects that “ASB is something I’m really passionate about, it’s really fun, and I enjoy being able to do this”.
Alyssa Li., Spirit rep, says, “I think it’s so much fun!”
When asked “How would you describe the ASB and Spirit group?”, representatives said “locked-in”, “passionate”, and “the best”. This team is currently planning a few events that will take place in the near future.
Right now, ASB and Spirit are planning a cookie decorating event. For this event, each homeroom will get a box with cookies and cookie decorating supplies.
Next, ASB is hoping to do something big after midterms, so look out for that! And the Winter Formal is coming up soon, with great decorations, and a lot of fun. Spirit rep Alyssa Li says that “you can expect a Winter Formal proposal contest with good prizes!” Block your calendars for this year’s Winter Formal!
So far, we’ve already seen a couple events from ASB and Spirit. But what if you have ideas or suggestions? Anusha A. explains, “We’re always open to new ideas, or things that students want to bring back.” Nolan H. adds that “Honestly, you can just come to any of the reps with ideas. It’s our job to listen to what you want from us.”
“You can reach out to reps in person or online” (Eva Yu). A grade rep brings the general interest of their grade to the table. By talking to someone from ASB or Spirit, your ideas can be heard.
Many people see the spirit days, dances, and more. But what happens at an ASB/Spirit meeting? ASB rep Eva Yu says, “At a meeting, we plan upcoming events, like what you saw on Halloween.”
Alyssa Li explains that “We also share feedback from our last event”. “Usually we just check in, and we talk about issues in our grade” (ASB rep Anusha). A lot of planning and reflection takes place at meetings.
As many of you know, ASB and Spirit is the team behind some of the big dances, spirit weeks, and food events that you see on the Overlake campus.
Have ideas? Reach out to a member of the team! Your voice can make an impact on the community. Thanks, and happy Fall!
