after december, he sees. he wipes his fingers clean of coal dust and watches. he sees through the trees, he sees through the rain, he sees through the very air that children breathe. and he sees, and he knows.
all 365 days of the year, he sees and he writes. he writes scroll after scroll, list after list, the children who have been bad, the people who have faults under their belt.
he watches through the year, a serene smile on his face, as crimes are committed, as lives are ruined. he watches, and writes it down.
every last exam cheated on, every last person teased, every last piece of candy secretly consumed.
he sees, and he knows.
he acknowledges too, those that have worked hard.
every last minute spent working, every last weight lifted at the gym, every last compliment handed out.
he sees, and he knows.
he sees everything and everyone, from the infant child born mere minutes ago, to the old lady laying on her deathbed, ready to give her soul to the sky.
but when the new year comes, he chooses to forget. all the sins in the past year, wiped from the slate. a new year has come, and his lists are clear. its time to start fresh, a new year, a new you.
happy new year!
